County says LTC recruitment successful, but still won’t meet staffing shortages

Bruce County Human Resources says despite the staffing shortages in long-term care work, they’re making tremendous strides in their recruitment efforts.

In a presentation yesterday, council heard that they’ve been able to recruit 167 staff since April 2020 and until a recent resignation, the county had a full complement of management.

Director of HR Sean Morphy says despite their success and an influx of provincial funding, they’ll have difficulty bringing in more support staff to fill growing vacancies.

“The reality is, there aren’t the people to fill the jobs that exist. We are doing absolutely everything we can, it’s great when the province provides funding, however, it’s really the education piece we are going to focus on the fill that gap,” Morphy said.

“We’ve had a lot of our RSAs (Resident Support Aids) show interest in the free PSW program that is available, however we only have one local college that is providing that program and we’re hearing people are waitlisted. So we have some unique challenges in our area.”
