Huron OPP Respond to False State of Emergency

OPP say they’ve been made aware of an article falsely claiming a state of emergency was declared in Huron County.

The article says the Huron Detachment Commander, five senior officers and 21 uniformed officers were all arrested and that policing responsibility has been assumed by the RCMP.

Huron County OPP say this information is completely false with no state of emergency declared with no OPP or municipal council members arrested.

Sergeant Ed Sanchuck says while Wednesday was April Fools, this kind of article isn’t a joke.

“The article may have been intended as an April Fools Joke but the OPP considers this type of content to be inappropriate and irresponsible particularly when it mimics legitmate news reporting with the potential to cause unnecessary concern in the community. Alleging police officers have been charged affects public trust and confidence as well as public safety. ” said Sanchuk.

OPP say even content presented as humour can have real world consequences.
