The $1 Million US prize is presented by the Varkey Foundation to a teacher who has made outstanding contributions as well as shine a spotlight on the important role teachers play in society.
Brenna Heels is one of ten finalists for the award and says she was approached by the organizers who encouraged her to apply.
Heels bases her teaching methods on the UN Global Goals and says it is important to teach students about their local environment as it can impact the global environment as well.
She says she hopes her nomination will shine a light on both teachers at the school and across the Bluewater District School Board.
The winner will be announced Wednesday November 10th.
