No downtown promenade this summer after Council defeats motion for its return

There will be no downtown promenade this summer in Kincardine.

Council at Monday’s Committee of the Whole meeting defeated a motion to bring back the promenade every weekend in July and August in a 3-3 tie vote.

A follow up motion to have the promenade just on the Saturday was also defeated.

One of the reasons for not bringing back the promenade was it closed Queen Street to vehicular traffic.

But Deputy Mayor Randy Roppel says this would allow the area to be open for other events in the downtown.

The Municipality brought in the promenade in 2020 as a way for merchants to bring their goods outside their stores while maintaining health measures meant to protect the public from COVID.

Roppel chaired the meeting as Mayor Gerry Glover was absent as was Councillor Andrea Clarke.

Councillor Doug Kennedy declared a conflict of interest and removed himself from the discussion.
