Ontario’s auditor general has found the province wasted around 38 per cent of COVID-19 vaccine doses between February and June due to overestimation of the demand for boosters.
Bonnie Lysyk in her report adds the waste rates varied a bit between public health units, with one private company wasting 57 per cent of its supply between May 2021 and May 2022.
She also found issues with the system for booking vaccines. The province had their portal for booking, but so did many local health units, which resulted in multiple bookings and lead to around 227,000 no shows in 2021.
