The Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority is beginning ash tree removal at the Stoney Island Conservation Area in August.
Since its arrival in Ontario in the early 2000’s the emerald ash borer has destroyed millions of ash trees.
They are a highly destructive, non-native beetle that feeds under the bark of the trees, girdling & eventually killing them.
The SVCA will begin removing around 7,300 ash trees on the Stoney Island Conservation Area.
Removal is not optional and is performed to ensure the safety of people who enjoy the property as a space for recreation.
The site will be closed for around 2.5 months while the work & related cleanup is underway.
There is a public meeting being held on Tuesday, July 25th from 7 to 8 pm in the Penetangore Room at the Davidson Centre.
Forestry staff will be present to explain the urgency of the removal, imminent temporary closure of the area & safety hazards linked to the emerald ash borer infestation.
The full details of the operation and the public meeting are available at the link below.
