Saugeen First Nation stop demolition at cultural site

Saugeen First Nation council says they’re working to ensure protection of an important Anishinaabe cultural site after a Southampton property owner began demolition work without securing any permits.

The property in question is located along South Rankin Street and is located on a registered archeological site. The owner began demolition on Nov. 10 but Saugeen Ojibway Nation’s archaeological manager Rob Martin quickly coordinated with the Town of Saugeen Shores to issue a stop work order.

SFN council is now pursuing options with the town, province and property owner to ensure the short and long-term protection of the site.

Those with questions about the process are asked to contact chief Conrad Ritchie.
