Saugeen Shores and Zonnebeke, Belgium, the home of the Battle of Passchendaele have a ratified a Memorandum of Understanding to build a sister city relationship.
The MOU comes after nearly 110 years since the battle, widely viewed as a defining moment in Canada’s emergence as a nation and shaping of Canadian identity.
Saugeen Shores is among those small communities who sent sons and daughters who sacrificed their lives in a defining moment of Canadian history.
This partnership builds a lasting town-to-town relationship connecting schools, museums, veterans’ organizations, heritage groups, and youth in both communities, and will also work with the Royal Canadian Legion, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, and Veterans Affairs Canada.
