Saugeen Shores considers new tool to speed up housing builds

Saugeen Shores is looking into implementing a new permit system to speed up the approval of new builds.

The planning committee has approved the exploration of a Community Planning Permit System, a legislative tool that would require only a single application for new builds. The town would determine which areas would benefit from the process, then developers would fill out an application that combines zoning, site plan and minor variance decisions.

Mayor Luke Charbonneau says the tool would make it easier to increase their supply of affordable homes, while allowing the town to retain control over what gets built.

The CPPS would not be impacted by changes brought on by the province’s new More Homes Built Faster Act.

Saugeen Shores staff are looking into the budget ramifications of implementing the new system and will return to council with a report in 2023.
