The Saugeen Shores Police Service shared a reminder to area residents of the Dog Owner Liability Act.
It comes after an off-duty Officer was bit by a dog while out for a walk in Port Elgin.
When approaching the dog walker they questioned if the dogs were friendly and were advised they were not.
Space was given, and although they were leashed, due to its size it was able to lunge at the officer causing puncture marks on their hand and scratches on their side.
Police remind everyone to make sure they prevent dogs from causing harm to another person or animal.
Always leash your dog and if needed muzzle them when out in public spaces.
The Dog Owner Liability Act outlines that penalties can be up to $10,000 and six months in prison if a biting or attach incident occurs or if the dog behaves in a manner that in a menace to person or other animals.
