An out of court settlement has been reached between Saugeen Ojibway Nation and the Town of Saugeen Shores.
This part of SON’s long-standing legal action regarding land along the Bruce Peninsula.
Terms of the settlement are said to be confidential but in a news release, Saugeen Shores agreed to 1.7 hectares of municipal property, financial compensation and a commitment for ongoing municipal support for housing development.
It goes on to say Saugeen Shores will work with SON to rename these lands in the Summerside development.
Saugeen First Nation Chief Lester Anoquot says through cooperation they were able to arrive at an agreement and close this chapter of SON’s land claim.
The Town says they look forward to working with SON on renaming initiatives and to jointly acknowledge the commitment to reconciliation by investing in the property.
