SIU Says No Wrongdoing in Wellness Check

The SIU says there was no wrongdoing by Saugeen Shores Officers who responded to a wellness check last November.

On November 9th police and paramedics attended the scene to check on a Port Elgin man who had taken a large amount of drugs and alcohol.

While there was no answer at the door, officers entered and found the man passed out with his children upstairs.

The SIU says an officer decided to apprehend him under the Mental Health Act when the man objected to the arrest.

After a struggle the man was taken down on the ground and handcuffed.

He was taken to hospital and weeks later on a return trip it was found the mans hand was fractured.

SIU Director Joseph Martino says officers used reasonable force and there are no grounds for charges.
