The by-law officer for the Township of Huron-Kinloss says no additional measures need to be implemented to help keep the stray cat population down.
In a report to council, Heather Falconer wrote that the Township only three complaints received pertaining to feral cats in 2022. Two of the complaints were collected on the same day and in the same area in Point Clark. No complaints were received from Lucknow.
Council put a bylaw in place in the summer of 2021 to prohibit citizens from feeding wildlife. Feeding feral animals comes with a charge of $250.
Staff had also explored options like a trap, neuter and release program or the licensing of cats, but those would come with additional costs and increased workload.
For now, staff recommends continuing to monitor and enforce the bylaw as the control measure for feral cat populations.
