Student Talent Shines at Skills Ontario Competition

Student talent was put on display at LDSS as part of a Skills Ontario Competition.

Students from various schools, including in Goderich and Exeter took part in a variety of competitions including Electrical Installations, Individual Carpentry, Team of Two Carpentry and Welding.

Those that have proven themselves could jump into the Skills Ontario Competition in Toronto on May 4th.

Jodi Froud, OYAP Recruiter – Pathways Coordinator for the Avon Maitland District School Board says this is a great way for students to shine, getting that level of push forward from their teachers.

“They’re looking at their students in class and going I want to be able to showcase these students and their skillsets and have them in a space where they can be congratulated by many different people because of what they do and how they do it.” said Froud.

Tyler Campbell, a teacher and guidance councilor who competed himself at a similar competition as an apprentice added he wants to give his students a similar chance to shine.

Campbell adds seeing students realizing they could turn a class into a career is something they’re seeing much more regular now.

“We see it all the time in our grade 9 rotation, they get a 6 piece trades where they do some welding, some electrical, some woodworking and those kids who thought they’d never be in those areas are all the sudden their eyes get lit up and you can see that passion starting.”
