The Varkey Foundation announced their Global Teacher Prize winner.

Unfortunately, a nominee from the Lion’s Head area did not get the $1 Million prize.

Breanna Heels — a vice-principal at Bruce Peninsula District School — was one of ten finalists.

She was nominated for engaging students to learn about both the local and global environments.

This year’s winner was Keishia Thorpe, a high school teacher from Blandensburg, Maryland, who opened up college education for low-income, first-generation American, immigrant and refugee students.

The award is given to a teacher who has made outstanding contributions as well as shine a spotlight on the important role teachers play in society.
