The Township of Huron-Kinloss received a presentation from a Consultant on Monday at the Council’s Committee of the Whole Meeting. At the meeting Chris Hughes, of BC Hughes Tourism Development, advised that due to shifting demographics the Ice Cream Trail event should be rebranded.

In the presentation he advised that due to the Covid-19 pandemic a shift in the area’s tourism market was occurring.

Whereas their average tourist was 57 years old with a household income of $114,000, there are now more younger families visiting the area.

The demographic is 35 to 54 years old with children over 10 with dual incomes. He added that rural tourism is becoming trendy and that showcasing the rural life, the arts, culture and heritage of location would benefit the community.

In the shift recommendations include Leveraging a Secrets of the Back 40 campaign as their core tourism and marketing experience for the township with a guide.

The Ice Cream Trail would then becoming a destination on the Back 40 map.

Township staff supported the recommendation of ending a stand alone Ice Cream Trail due to decreased participating.
