The Bruce-Grey Catholic District School Board offered a response to the recently released Ontario Human Rights Commission’s Right to Ready Public Inquiry.
In it the OHRC found that Ontario’s Public Education System is not meeting the needs of students with reading disabilities by not using evidence-based approaches when teaching students how to read.
The Report outlined 157 recommendations to the Ministry, school boards and faculties of education on how to address the systematic issues.
The Bruce-Grey Catholic Board welcomed the report and advised they are implementing Essenstial Literary Practices that focus on the consoldation of students’ early reading skills, along with both System Wide and Voluntary Professional Development.
They also added that they are creating a Board Reading Continuum Website that includes scope and sequences, teaching materials, resources and professional learning around essential reading skills.
