The mural painted by the late Allen Hilgendorf has been removed from the building on the corner of Goderich and Mill Street.
The mural was commissioned by the Port Elgin homecoming committee in 2000 and was funded by a provincial grant.
In the spring of 2021, the Peevers family wished to repaint and repair their building, but the mural on the side of their building was showing obvious signs of deterioration.
Attempts to find a solution to keep the mural were unsuccessful as the Port Elgin BIA looked to find a new location for the mural, as well as possibilities of a new mural.
Due to the large size of the mural and its deteriorated condition, the Port Elgin BIA was unable to find a new home for the mural.
Downtown Port Elgin wrote on their Facebook page today that they would like to “thank the Peevers family for graciously allowing this mural to be displayed on their building for more than 20 years.”
The Peevers family is continuing their efforts in exploring new possibilities for a mural with the support of the Port Elgin BIA.
