The South Bruce OPP is sending out a fraud warning after a significant amount of money has been lost by residents of Bruce County.

Police say over $500,000 has been reported lost in the last six weeks due to bitcoin and romance scams.

They suggest that residents: never share personal information when chatting online, question unsolicited “crypto stock trading” offers and think of a request for money as a red flag.

Police warn that scams can be very convincing and that scammers won’t hesitate to use the name of a legitimate company to gain your trust and trick you into paying them.

Anyone interested in more information on fraud can contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or check online at www.antifraudcentre.ca.

The South Bruce OPP is requesting anyone with information to call 1-888-310-1122. Should you wish to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
