United Way Bruce Grey is taking part in Coldest Night of the Year for the first time this year, and they’re encouraging participating communities to get involved.

Saugeen Shores and Kincardine will both hold their first ever winter walks in support of people experiencing hunger, hurt and homelessness, but only one of those municipalities is close to hitting their fundraising goal.

Saugeen Shores is halfway to their goal of $20,000, with 113 walkers registered. Kincardine is lagging way behind, having hit just 15% of their goal with less than three weeks until the event.

All events take place on Feb. 25. The Saugeen Shores walk begins and ends at Coulter Parkette in Port Elgin.

The Kincardine walk begins and ends at Knox Presbyterian Church. Participants can walk a two or five kilometre route, warm up with toasty drinks, and celebrate their efforts together at the finish line. All those who raise over $150 (or $75 for youth) will also get a CNOY toque.

In Huron County Goderich Public School has registered a team and will do a school-wide walk the day before on February 24th in the afternoon.

United Way says those that can’t make the event can still complete it remotely on another day.
