Bruce County is holding a housing forum in Walkerton today, gathering area leaders to learn more about the shortage of residences available in the region and to brainstorm ideas for improvement.

The forum included a presentation of a recent housing demographic study KPMG carried out, which found that four in five Bruce County dwellings are a single detached house.

With the county’s population growing at a rapid rate and the average age increasing, Mathieu Laberge the Lead Engagement Partner says there will be more challenges brought on by the shifting demographics.

“As the Baby Boomers are retiring, it’s the largest generation ever that will be looking for those (rural) areas. In the next census, we’ll see some increases in the population in the county. They will be seeking quality of life, areas to live outside of urban centres,” he said during a Q&A.

“That combination of supply and demand is what will make affordability and other housing challenges evolve.”

The county is running a survey until tomorrow about their strategic plan, so if you have thoughts on housing, let them be heard here.
