The Municipality of Kincardine says garbage bag tags will cost $3.50 per bag as of Tuesday, March 7th. This comes after council passed the Rates and Fees By-Law at their meeting on March 6th.

The $1 increase is set to generate an estimated $160,000 in additional revenue in 2023. Council approved  the move back at their February 27th budget meeting.

Funding for the Municipality’s solid waste management program comes in part from a user-pay format. The bag increase, along with landfill disposal fees, help offset around 78% of the program’s operating expenses. The general tax base covers the remaining 22%.

Adam Weishar, Director of Infrastructure and Development says it’s been some time since there’s been an increase to the cost of bag tags in the Municipality. He adds they will continue to explore possibilities for improving their waste collection, recycling and composting options.

Those are programs in place to help reduce the waste going to the curb in garbage bags.

All residential and commercial properties within the Municipality of Kincardine are required to purchase and place a bag tag on each bag of garbage placed at the curb for collection.
