Volkswagen announced it is stepping up its activities in North America in a bid to take a strong position in the growing market of battery electric vehicles.

The Group and its battery company PowerCo have selected St. Thomas, Ontario to establish the company’s first overseas gigafactory of cell manufacturing, which will produce sustainable unified cells, with start of production expected in 2027.

The site is the third company owned plant next to Salzgitter, Germany and Valencia, Spain.

The move is set to support the company’s new Scout all-electric vehicle brand.
