A group of Walkerton businesses who have banded together to raise awareness of the pending closure of the Durham Street bridge in their community has seen over 1,000 people sign a petition in support of the cause in the past 2 weeks.

The group calls themselves “Keep Walkerton Connected” and launched a Facebook group and a petition back on Saturday, June 10th after they found out the preferred option by Bruce County Council at this time is to have drivers detour around the community nearly 7km when their downtown bridge is closed for replacement.

A temporary bridge was considered for the location, but it carries a cost of $6.3 million dollars plus engineering costs.
