Grey Bruce Public Health is advising swimmers to be cautious around the beaches after a period of heavy rainfall.

Public health says usually within 48 hours of heavy showers the water will remain unusually cloudy and could pose a risk to human health.

Senior Public Health Manager Andrew Barton says public health does have a beach monitoring program but it takes days to get results from submitted samples.

Barton adds its best for the public to use their best judgement in real time to decide to swim in or use recreational water.

Pathogens such as E. Coli can be present in beach waters at levels above the Ministry of Health guidelines which can cause infections or illness if swallowed or if it gets into your eyes, ears or open cuts.
