Ontario’s top court is upholding a lower court’s ruling that a northern strip of Sauble Beach has always belonged to Saugeen Ojibway Nation.
A decision made on Monday, the Ontario Court of Appeal dismissed the appeals made by South Bruce Peninsula, the Ontario government.
Saugeen First Nation Chief Conrad Ritchie in a statement says it’s a powerful moment for the Saugeen community.
The court upheld Saugeen Ojibway Nation’s ownership of the northern part of Sauble Beach with the ruling granting 2.2 kilometers of beach north of Main Street.
Ritchie adds after generations of struggle, this is a victory which belongs to the entire community adding the relationship with the lands and waters is central to their way of life.
