Flying bat hunting in forest. The grey long-eared bat (Plecotus austriacus) is a fairly large European bat. It has distinctive ears, long and with a distinctive fold. It hunts above woodland, often by day, and mostly for moths.

Grey Bruce Public Health says a bat from Grey-Bruce has tested positive for rabies.

Public health says the little brown bat had been tested earlier this week as part of its investigation into a potential human exposure.

The person involved in the incident is getting post exposure treatment which will help prevent a rabies infection.

Andrew Barton, Senior Public Health Manager says while the risk of getting rabies is low, the case confirms the presence of rabies in the area and highlights the importance of avoid contact with wildlife to prevent bites and scratches.

This is the first animal rabies case in Grey-Bruce this year.

In 2023 there was 56 confirmed cases of wildlife rabies in Ontario with most of the cases coming from bats.
