Saugeen First Nation is over halfway to their fundraising goal to furnish a new hospice, thanks in part to donations from two of the area’s biggest employers.

Both Chapman’s Ice Cream and Bruce Power donated $20,000 each toward the Saugeen First Nation Hospice.

Cathy Banks, Nursing Manager of Home and Community Care, says that name is just a placeholder, eventually the hospice will be given an Ojibwe moniker once they’ve received feedback from the band.

The hospice will be attached to the elder’s facility and have space to accommodate an end of life patient as well as their family.

Construction is slated to be finished later this spring. The capital costs have been covered by federal and provincial grants.

Banks says it’s important to have a dedicated space in the community that integrates physical, psychological, social and spiritual care, so that members don’t have to travel far at the end of life.

She says they have currently raised $68,000 toward their $100,000 goal to furnish the hospice.

To donate to the Saugeen Hospice at Home project, you can contact Banks at 519-374-3963 or email cathy.banks@saugeen.org.
