Huron Perth Public Health says the number of influenza and RSV cases in the area are declining as respiratory illness indicators improve.

It’s not all good news, as the Health Unit says there have been eight deaths due to COVID since the start of the year. Seven of those were associated with outbreaks in long-term care homes

There is currently two active outbreaks in LTCs and 10 people in hospital due to the virus.

Medical Officer of Health Dr Miriam Klassen sent condolences in a release, reminding people to take precautions to protect those more vulnerable to severe outcomes.

Actions that prevent the spread of respiratory illnesses include:

  • Staying home if you are sick
  • Screening for respiratory symptoms daily
  • Wearing a mask in indoor public settings
  • Staying up-to-date with vaccines (including COVID-19 and influenza)
  • Keeping physical distance when possible, especially indoors
    • Improving ventilation and filtration in your home and maintaining HVAC systems
