The Municipality of Kincardine passed a by-law at Wednesday’s council meeting aimed at curbing false alarm calls to the Fire & Emergency Services Department.

It will see a second false alarm call assessed a service charge of $300 with each subsequent false alarm billed at $500 per incident.

The move is being taken in part to motivate owners of properties with faulty fire alarms to get them fixed, says Councillor Rory Cavanaugh.

“Statistically an operations 2 call, which is a false alarm is about 1.4 hours per multiplied. So, we end up with some significant savings. Just to leave you with a final number, there are locations in the Municipality that are sending upwards of 20 false alarms a year.”

The By-Law would permit one false alarm be allowed without cost to a property.
