Huron County OPP charged an impaired Goderich driver on Saturday, but it wasn’t a truck or a car they were behind the wheel of… it was a mobility scooter.

Police received a tip just after midnight on Jan. 7 from a concerned resident on St. David Street who saw a scooter being driven by a man they believed had been drinking alcohol.

Officers located the suspect a short time later on Walnut Street, but the scooter had been abandoned on John Street. The driver displayed signs of impairment and was placed under arrest and taken into custody.

The accused was then transported to the Huron OPP Detachment for breath tests and failed two samples

As a result, a 56 year-old-man from Goderich has been charged with operation while impaired. They were released from custody with a court appearance scheduled for February.

Police would like to remind the public that mobility scooters are defined as motor vehicles under the Criminal Code of Canada.
