Hanover Police Chief Christopher Knoll shared info on what a surety is & the responsibility that comes along with becoming one.
This is after a 20-year-old saw his surety revoked, and a warrant issued for his arrest.
He was held for bail and later remanded to custody.
A Surety is where a person comes to court and promises to supervise an accused person while they are out on bail.
Chief Knoll says people are often called without warning or notice by a lawyer seeking approval to list someone as a surety and have them appear the same day by video in court.
Knoll says to think these decisions through & know they don’t need to be made that day.
It’s a tremendous responsibility that can lead to legal consequences for the surety.
