A local Hanover 13-year-old is preparing to travel to South Africa in June to take part in a kickboxing competition.

Macy Metcalfe has been involved in the sport since she was 6 years old.

She tells of how recently she began taking part in competitions.

“I started fighting in May of 2022. I just really loved all the excitement. I went on to Nationals, Provincials and the Ontario Winter Games. I fought at fight shows and I just loved it.

While in South Africa in June Macy will be taking part in 4 competitions in total; 2 fight shows and 2 open tournaments in Cape Town.

She is currently fundraising to help over the estimated $10,000 that it will cost for her and her mother to attend.

Grace United Church in Hanover is holding a Spaghetti Dinner and Silent Auction Fundraiser on Saturday, April 29th from 5 to 8 pm.

It will see money go in support of Macy and the five other athletes representing Team Canada on the trip to South Africa.

The cost is $10 per adult and $5 per child.

For ticket info and for donations toward the trip you can contact Golden Tiger at 519-364-0123.
