The Maitland Conservation Authority has joined the calls against the Ontario government’s proposed More Homes Built Faster Act, penning a letter to Premier Doug Ford.

Known as Bill 23, the tabled legislation would override many municipal powers to oversee planning in the interest of speeding up development. Maitland Conservation Authority highlighted concerns with the bill, saying it could set back 70 years of watershed management at a time when the work is needed to address the growing impacts of climate change.

They write that the proposed changes will weaken the ability of conservation authorities to protect people and property from natural hazards and the bill will not achieve the objectives that the government is looking for in order to quickly address the housing crisis.

You can make a submission to the Standing Committee reviewing Bill 23 by 7 p.m. this Thursday, Nov. 17.
