The OPP held an online media event this afternoon to educate the viewers on the Emergency Grandparent Scam that is becoming prevalent in attempts to defraud the most vulnerable in our community.
Detective Constable John Armit of the Anti-Rackets Branch of the OPP tells what it may entail.
“What the fraudsters do is they will claim to be law enforcement, lawyers, impersonate grand children or relatives. They will then make an immediate demand for payment for bail, for fines, to avoid going to jail or to get out of trouble.”
The session included input from police, member of the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre and a victim themselves who were targeted by the scam.
