This is Motorcycle Awareness Month and the Ontario Provincial Police are out with statistics that reveal who is to blame for crashes involving motorcycles.

According to a news release, the OPP have investigated 326 motorcycle collisions between 2012 and 2021 that resulted in 342 people being killed.

They say over that 10-year period, over 60 percent of the crashes were the fault of the driver who had died, and close to 40 percent determined that the other driver was to blame.

120 of the fatalities involved a single motorcycle while 222 involved at least one other vehicle.

The 45 to 54 age bracket accounted for the highest number of motorcycle fatalities during that time frame.

In 2021 alone, there were 34 motorcycle crashes that claimed the lives of 35 people.

OPP say the data is a stark reminder that there is no margin for error on the part of motorcyclists.

They go on to say that even the safest, most defensive riders must rely on nearby motorists exercising the same degree of safety.
