The Grey Bruce OPP are urging residents to stay vigilant against scammers following a recent case where a Grey Bruce resident was scammed out of approximately $200,000.

The victim became involved in the scam after receiving a voicemail that he had won a lottery.

During the course of the investigation it was discovered the victim had sent the scammers several installments of cash via a courier, believing then that they would be able to claim their prize.

The scammer maintained contact with the victim over a period of time, and assisted in providing direction for the transactions.

Police say to remember that savvy con artists can create a very convincing scam to trick you into giving them money. They can pretend to work for an established, well known business or even a branch of the government.

They will often have basic information about you before they call.
