The Ontario Provincial Police issued a warning about “Winter Driving Amnesia” saying it can be beaten.

Symptoms include driving too fast in less-than-ideal conditions, following too closely and failing to plan for bad-weather driving conditions.

They advise a leading cause of collisions in winter months is poor driving, not driving conditions.

Tips they provide include:

  • Slow down
  • Adjust your driving to road & weather conditions
  • Allow extra time to travel to & from a destination
  • Leave extra space between vehicles
  • Stay alert & focused on the road
  • Engage your full headlights at all times
  • Never stop on the roadway if possible (or stay in your vehicle off to the side if stuck and wait for help to arrive)
  • Before heading out check MTO’s Ontario 511 website for up-to-date road information.
