The City of Ottawa through Mayor Jim Watson declared a state of emergency on Sunday. The move gives the municipality more options when it comes to dealing with the ongoing protests that have overwhelmed local police forces.

The city released a brief with the announcement saying the move reflects the “serious danger and threats to the safety and security of residents posed by the ongoing demonstrations”

The release also states that the decision underlines the need for support from other jurisdictions and higher levels of government. The move also provides more flexibility in municipal administration and offers streamlined processes to purchase equipment required by frontline workers and first responders.
