The Kincardine Outdoor Pickleball Committee took the first step toward having courts to call their own, after presenting to local council this week.

The committee was seeking the municipality’s approval in principle to construct six pickleball specific courts in town, as well as approval for $200,000 in funding that would be paid back through grants and fundraising.

The committee is eyeing McPherson Park as the potential home for the courts, right between the tennis courts and lawn bowling.

Staff suggested waiting until the Recreation Master Plan was completed this fall before making any major decisions on future pickleball courts, but council wanted a quicker turnaround so the committee could meet funding application deadlines.

Coun. Bill Stewart made a motion to get a report back to council for next month, which was passed by council.

The pickleball committee was hoping to have courts installed by 2024, and is also seeking a stop-gap solution for the meantime: either lining the tennis courts and splitting time evenly or having temporary courts put in the Davidson Centre parking lot.
