Grey-Bruce Public Health has released its report on food affordability.

The report dubbed The Cost of Eating Well & The Urgent Issue of Food Insecurity shows the average price for groceries for a family of four in Grey-Bruce was $301 a week or $1305 a month in 2023.

A family who receives Ontario Works would spend 47 per cent of their monthly income to meet Canada’s Food Guide recommendations and after covering rent and groceries, they would be left with only $238 a month to cover all other expenses.

Grey Bruce Public Health Manager Jason Weppler says these scenarios show the social safety net is failing to meet basic needs of housing and food.
