Following the sudden closure of the Goderich Arena on Friday, a meeting was called on Monday for the public to stay up to date on the plans ahead.
The arena was closed until further notice due to aging infrastructure, lack of long term investment and financial issues with the town saying there is a need to address safety and accessibility concerns.
When asked why the arena was closed suddenly with no evidence saying it needs to be, Goderich Mayor Trevor Bazinet says they do have evidence of the need for closure but they can’t discuss it publicly.
“That was dealt with in closed session so anything discussed in closed session if it doesn’t come out in open its part of the Municipal Act and it stays closed. We received information from staff and they made us aware of some issues and council made a decision that it was time to close the doors.” Bazinet
Bazinet added this entire process will not be done overnight and make sure the arena will be safe for everyone to use.
