The Town of Saugeen Shores received a report at its meeting on Monday on the possible expansion of access for local dog owners to bring their animals to the municipal waterfronts.

In the report Chief Building Official Josh Planz and Staff recommended the expansion following public consultation with two areas, one in Southampton and another in Port Elgin, being considered.

Southampton Councillor John Diviniski offered his thoughts.

β€œIn this case we are talking about two areas that can be used as Dog beaches. We are talking north of the flag to the river (in Southampton) and 538 Izzard to Concession 6, Bruce Road 25 (in Port Elgin), where according to the Vice Deputy Mayor they have been using for years anyways.”

Mayor Luke Charbonneau voiced his concerns, which included that the Port Elgin location was already a busy beach and once dogs were permitted that the appropriate by-law enforcement was in place.

He voiced support with considering a Pilot Project of a location in the future and a more targeted approach.

Council voted to defer the decision for Staff for suggestions on alternatives.
