Saugeen Shores residents as of next year will get year round access to ice at the Plex.
Council gave the green light to start up a pilot program to offer year round ice time from 2025-27 with a long term decision coming at the end of the program.
A survey done in the spring showed there was overwhelming support to have this pilot project, Mayor Luke Charbonneau is encouraging users to take advantage of the summer ice time as that will help ensure the ice can stay long term.
“If we run deficits, if it becomes a burden on the tax payer rather than a benefit, the program is likely to not continue. So the things now is to get folks out there, use the ice, let’s book it all up and then you’ll have a 12 month ice program for now and the future.” said Charbonneau.
Staff estimates ice would be booked for 50 hours a week in their first year.
