Kincardine council has chosen to decommission the Secord Monument, ending a multi months long discussion on the topic.

The question on what to do with the monument first came into question after issues were raised regarding Dr. Soloman Secord’s service to the Confederate Army in the American Civil War.

Council’s decision on Wednesday was a result of community feedback.

There was ideas of relocating the monument and having more historical context but when multiple sites were approached about hosting the monument, all declined to accept.

Mayor Kenneth Craig says there already is monuments to Secord and removing this one can be done.

“We know that Dr. Secord has a monument at the Kincardine cemetery. We know that there is a display at the Walker House celebrating his achievements. For these and other reasons I believe personally would support the respectful decommissioning of the Secord monument.” said Craig.

In a statement, the municipality says they remain committed to fostering an inclusive environment where residents feel valued.
