The South Bruce OPP are sending advisory to area golf cart owners after one was warned after operating it on a roadway yesterday evening.

Police received the report of a cart being driven on Victoria Street and when officers arrived they located it parked at a residence.

The owner was spoken to and warned. Although golf carts can resemble low-speed vehicles they do not meet the safety standards in the Highway Traffic Act and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

They must not be operated on a roadway in Ontario.

Police say potential fines can include operating it on a roadway without insurance, without required equipment, no vehicle permit and no driver’s license.

There is currently an MTO pilot project to allow golf carts on roadways.

This only applies in Huron-Kinloss and Peelee Island. An amendment to the Highway Traffic Act and a Municipal bylaw is required to permit the operation of a golf car on the road
