The Town of South Bruce Peninsula held a Compliance Audit Committee meeting last Thursday after a request last month for an audit into the campaign finances of Town Mayor Garry Michi by a member of the community.

At issue predominantly are donations from corporations received by the campaign that the mayor attributes to corporations he wholly owns in relation to two campgrounds.

A Staff Report received at the meeting outlined that sections of the Municipal Elections Act may have been in non-compliance with his campaign.

In terms of the next steps, the Committee gave direction to the Town Clerk to hire an independent auditor to examine Michi’s election finances as well as a prosecutor to take the case to the Superior Court of Justice.

The Town is on the hook for the cost of the compliance audit.
