The Town of South Bruce Peninsula passed a by-law at its meeting Tuesday morning appointing Deputy Mayor Jay Kirland to the position of Mayor effective today.
The seat of Mayor became vacant last month with the resignation of former mayor Gary Michi.
Kirkland was sworn in as Mayor following the passing of the by-law and he had this to say earlier in the meeting on why he supports appointment.
“We need to get back to business, we have a budget coming up, we need to bring some normal business actions back to the Municipality. For us to have an election right now we could be 6 months.”
Next on the agenda for South Bruce Peninsula will be filling the now-vacant Deputy Mayor Position with Kirkland moving up-to Mayor.
The same options exist for getting it filled as were present for Mayor.
