Representatives from South Bruce toured a deep geological repository for high level nuclear waste in Finland last week.
Members of the community, Council, Community Liaison members and municipal staff were in Onkalo, Finland. It is an island off of Finland’s west coast.
It is currently under construction and expected to begin operations next year.
They also toured the Encapsulation Plant and Olkiluoto Nuclear Power Plant. The group met with the Mayor of the area, Vesa Lakaniemi, and took part in import learning opportunities.
South Bruce is one of two final areas that the NWMO is considering to securely store Canada’s used nuclear fuel in a DGR.
Funding for the trip was provided by the NWMO under a Multi-Year Funding Agreement approved by Council back in December.
