Stories of 2023: Remembering Goderich Mayor Myles Murdock

It was a sudden change in council in Goderich when Myles Murdock passed away peacefully on August 17th.

Murdock was a teacher for 28 years who joined councilor in 2006, serving until 2010 and returning again from 2014-2018. Murdock was Deputy Mayor in 2022 when he was elected as Mayor.

With the role needing to be filled, Deputy Mayor Trevor Bazinet was appointed as Mayor on August 23rd.

Bazinet says he was honored to be elected who looked up to Murdock as a mentor.

“We’ve been on council together for 9 years. Not only have I lost a mentor but a great friend. We worked well together. When I was appointed Mayor there was a lot of emotion. It was sad and happy and I wasn’t sure how to react but I kept saying to myself this is what Myles would want” said Bazinet.

Murdock was also a basketball coach for many Goderich youth for 45 years who stepped into politics following in the footsteps of his father and sister.
